Games like Persona 5
The three best games after Persona 5 Royal are Metaphor: ReFantazio (the same team's calendar-RPG, aimed at politics instead of school), Persona 3 Reload (the series' heart, remade properly) and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (the turn-based revelation of 2025). Ten entries ranked below by which part of P5R they carry: the calendar, the bonds, or the style. The deliberate skip is Persona 5 Strikers — a musou action game wearing the cast, with the calendar and social links absent.
Persona 5 Royal hooks people with something no other RPG structure has: the calendar. Days are currency — spend one on a friend, a dungeon, a book — and that scarcity makes a 100-hour game feel urgent. 96% positive across 137,000 Steam reviews. Most recommendations copy the turn-based combat and forget the clock.
The ten entries below are ranked by which piece of the machine they actually deliver: time pressure, relationships that matter mechanically, or the sheer audiovisual swagger. One is a deliberate skip — the spin-off most often mistaken for more Persona.

How we picked these
- Turn-based (or turn-honest) combat with weakness systems worth exploiting.
- Characters you invest in mechanically, not just narratively.
- A structure that gives shape to long play — calendar, chapters or loops.
- Style as substance: menus, music and momentum.
- Steam ratings quoted per entry, so every claim is checkable.
The list
Best buy in this guide today: Metaphor: ReFantazio at 16,52 € — close to its July 2026 low, the cheapest we have recorded since June 2026.
01 Metaphor: ReFantazio
Metaphor: ReFantazio is the Persona team asking 'what if the calendar ran an election instead of a school year' — same bonds, same deadline pressure, a fantasy kingdom instead of Tokyo. 90% positive across 42,000 Steam reviews. The archetype system out-builds Personas, and the answer to 'what next' does not get more direct than this.
Close to its July 2026 low, the cheapest we have recorded since June 2026 — waiting is unlikely to save much.
02 Persona 3 Reload
Persona 3 Reload is where the formula was born, remade with P5R's production values: the calendar, the social links, and the series' heaviest theme carried lightly. 94% across 62,000 reviews. Slightly narrower than Royal — one dungeon, deep — and its ending remains the franchise's best.
Close to its August 2026 low, the cheapest we have recorded since June 2026 — waiting is unlikely to save much.
03 Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 proved in 2025 that turn-based can still shock: parry-timing inside turns, Belle Époque grief instead of high school, and 95% positive across 276,000 reviews. No calendar, no bonds system — it is here because P5R players kept asking what could possibly follow it, and this is the answer.
Close to its October 2026 low, the cheapest we have recorded since June 2026 — waiting is unlikely to save much.
04 Persona 4 Golden
Persona 4 Golden is the cozy one: a murder mystery in a fog-wrapped country town where the bonds hit warmer and the stakes sit closer to home. 97% across 86,000 reviews — the highest-rated Persona on Steam. Older systems, dated dungeon design, and a cast people name their pets after.
05 Yakuza: Like a Dragon
Yakuza: Like a Dragon is Persona's soul in a 40-year-old body: turn-based combat played sincerely, found-family bonds, and a hero whose superpower is enthusiasm. 94% across 37,000 reviews. Swap the school calendar for part-time jobs and karaoke — the warmth transfers completely.
06 Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is Persona's older sibling with the charm removed and the combat sharpened: press-turn battles that punish sloppy weakness play, at 92% across 12,000 reviews. No social links, no calendar — buy it when what you actually loved was the fusion lab and the fights.
07 DRAGON QUEST XI S: Definitive Edition
Dragon Quest XI S is the genre's comfort classic: 93% positive, a hundred hours of sincere adventure with the best pacing in modern JRPGs. None of Persona's edge or time pressure — all of its 'one more evening' pull. The Definitive Edition includes an orchestral option; use it.
08 NieR:Automata
NieR:Automata trades the calendar for an existential spiral: action combat, three-act structure that rewrites itself, and the only soundtrack conversation P5's can lose. 87% across 152,000 reviews. Play to ending E before judging anything — the game is the whole shape, not the first run.
09 The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
Trails in the Sky is the bonds pick for readers: a series where NPCs have ongoing lives and the world-building compounds across games like interest. 94% positive. Slower and plainer than Persona — the payoff arrives in hour thirty and keeps arriving for a decade of sequels.
SKIP10 Persona 5 Strikers
Skip Persona 5 Strikers as your next Persona — it is a musou action game wearing the cast, at 87%: a good road-trip epilogue for superfans, but the calendar, social links and turn-based tension are all absent. If you want more of what Royal actually is, Metaphor or P3 Reload deliver; Strikers is dessert, not dinner.
Similar but different
Hades
Hades runs Persona's real engine — relationships that deepen through repetition — inside a roguelike: every death is a calendar day, every conversation compounds. 98% across 307,000 reviews.
Disco Elysium
Disco Elysium is the confidant system turned inward: the voices you level up are your own skills, arguing. 93% across 130,000 reviews. No combat at all — the deepest character work on this page.
Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley is the calendar without the apocalypse: seasons, townsfolk whose hearts you win, and days that always end too soon. 98% across 1 million reviews. Persona players recognise the loop instantly.
FAQ
What is the closest thing to Persona 5 Royal?
Metaphor: ReFantazio — same developers, same calendar-and-bonds skeleton, new setting. Persona 3 Reload is the pick if you want to stay in the series; expect a heavier tone and a tighter scope than Royal.
Persona 3 Reload or Persona 4 Golden first?
Reload for modern comfort and production; Golden for the warmest cast and the highest Steam rating of the three (97%). Golden shows its age in dungeons; Reload streamlines almost everything. Story-wise they stand alone — order is preference.
Is Expedition 33 really in this conversation?
Yes, with the caveat named in its entry: no calendar, no social sim. It is here because it delivers what P5R's combat delivered — turn-based fights that feel dangerous and stylish — better than anything else recent, at 95% across 276,000 reviews.
I loved the social links most of all. What now?
Trails in the Sky for slow-burn relationships across a saga, Stardew Valley for the pure daily-life version, Hades for bonds-through-repetition. Metaphor's follower system is the closest direct mechanical match.
