Games like Baldur's Gate 3

The three closest things to Baldur's Gate 3 are Divinity: Original Sin 2 (same studio, same systemic chaos), Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (deeper character building, uglier interface) and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader (the reactivity, in space). The full ranking sorts ten games by which BG3 itch they scratch: the party, the tactics, or the feeling that the game saw what you did.

Nothing else is Baldur's Gate 3 — 853,000 Steam reviews at 97% positive did not happen by accident, and no studio has matched that production level in a CRPG since. So this list does not pretend to. Instead it splits BG3 into its three parts — a party worth talking to, turn-based fights worth thinking about, and a world that reacts — and tells you, per game, which part you are actually buying.

One entry is a deliberate skip: the game every algorithm recommends after BG3 that answers the wrong question. Every recommendation is out of early access and rated at least 83% positive on Steam; the skip sits far below that, which is part of the point.

How we picked these

  • A party of companions with their own agendas — not silent stat blocks.
  • Turn-based or pausable combat where positioning matters more than reflexes.
  • Choices that visibly change quests, endings or who survives.
  • Finished, patched games — no early access, no 'wait for the enhanced edition'.
  • At least 83% positive on Steam with enough reviews to trust the number.

The list

  1. 01 Divinity: Original Sin 2

    Adventure · RPG · Strategy

Larian's previous game, and the answer to 'more of exactly this'. The elemental surface system — fire, poison, blessed rain — makes combat even more chaotic than BG3's, and it supports the same 4-player co-op. The writing is a step down from BG3 and origin companions carry the story less; the systems are a step up.

  2. 02 Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

    Action · Adventure · Indie

For the character-builder half of your brain. The Pathfinder ruleset dwarfs D&D 5e — 25 classes before archetypes, plus mythic paths that let you finish the campaign as a lich, angel or swarm of flies, each with different reactivity. The trade: dated presentation, no cinematic dialogue, and an honest need to read tooltips.

  3. 03 Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

    Action · Adventure · Indie

The reactivity pick. You govern a fleet and planets in the 40k universe, and your dogma-vs-heresy choices reshape companions, colonies and endings the way BG3's biggest decisions do. Turn-based combat is solid rather than brilliant; the writing density is the reason to come.

    Action · RPG

Not a CRPG — a turn-based RPG with reactive parries — but it is the closest any recent game comes to BG3's 'every hour is an event' pacing, and 95% positive across 276,000 reviews says it delivers. Pick it when what you miss is the story and spectacle, not the character sheet.

  5. 05 Dragon Age: Origins

    RPG

The companion-drama pick, from 2009 and still unmatched at origin stories: six different openings that change how the whole game reads you. Combat is real-time-with-pause and shows its age. Play it for the camp conversations — the thing BG3 learned from it.

  6. 06 Mass Effect Legendary Edition

    Action · RPG

Three games of party loyalty, romance and consequence in one package, with decisions carrying across the whole trilogy — a longer arc than even BG3 attempts. It is a shooter-RPG, not tactics, so pick it when you want the relationships without the grid.

  7. 07 Wasteland 3

    RPG · Strategy

Squad turn-based tactics in frozen Colorado with the meanest sense of humour on this list. Less companion romance, more faction politics — nearly every quest has a third, uncomfortable solution. The mid-tier production is the price of admission.

  8. 08 Solasta: Crown of the Magister

    Adventure · RPG · Strategy

The most faithful D&D 5e implementation on PC — more faithful than BG3, which house-rules constantly. Verticality, flying, light sources and readied actions all work by the book. The written story is forgettable; buy it as a tactics engine, not a novel.

  9. SKIP

    09 Starfield

    RPG

Skip if BG3 is the reason you are here — Starfield's dialogue rarely reacts to who you are, and its checks do not compare to a single act of BG3's reactivity. If you want a big RPG where choices land, pick Rogue Trader; if you want open-world wandering, The Witcher 3 does it with better writing.

FAQ

Is Divinity: Original Sin 2 as good as Baldur's Gate 3?

Mechanically it is arguably better — the elemental interactions give you more tools than BG3's 5e ruleset. The writing, cinematics and companions are a clear tier below. Same studio, five years less budget.

Should I play Pathfinder: Kingmaker before Wrath of the Righteous?

No. Wrath of the Righteous is the better game in every measurable way and the stories are independent. Kingmaker is for afterwards, if you want more.

What is the closest game to BG3 in co-op?

Divinity: Original Sin 2 — same 4-player structure, same 'one player talks to the quest-giver while another robs the house' chaos. Nothing else on this list does co-op at that level.

I loved BG3's story but turn-based combat bores me. What fits?

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II or Mass Effect Legendary Edition — both carry choice-and-consequence storytelling with real-time play. Disco Elysium removes combat entirely.
